hey guys!

i am going to buy a couple of hystrix rays.
I was wondering if there are any people around who can tell me something about there growth rate!

i want to combine them with peacock bass. But the rays are small rays, about 4 inch. i see alot of tanks with pbass and rays,
do you introduce the pbass when the rays are big or can u start with baby rays and baby pbass(2 inch)? thats what i am planning to do.

thnx allot!

Due to the ban on exporting stingrays from brazil it is highly unlikely that what your getting will be a "true" hystrix. It will probably be a humerosa/orbinyi type ray. Pictures will help us give you an id. True hystrix are one of the 3 smallest rays and max out at like 18 inches(disk width, not including tail. Whereas humerosas and orbinyis are estimated to be larger, 24"+?

I would not recommed small pbass with rays, they will probably end up eventually being stingray food.

if you read his locaton and if that is correct hystrix are fairly easy to get in europe...

as far as growth rate i have heard of them breeding at 2 years old but this has not been 100% confirmed

Yeah I would say that the likelyhood of a true Histrix is just about as good as someone importing false ones and selling them in Europe (not alot of market in his area for ugly brown rays I'd imagine?) but who knows..

Growth rates have alot of variable.. you can basically control it with feeding schedules and temps. High temps and high protein foods, plenty of water changes and they will grow pretty quickly, adult size in a year or two.. Mid 70s temps with a well balanced diet and a nitrate accumulation based water change schedule, and you will have a bit longer ...

there are breeders of histrix in europe and you can get them more easy than you can here in the states.
As for growth rates, I had 3 pups a couple of months ago and all of them eat the same food, and they are all 3 different sizes. It really depends on the ray. If you put histrix with peacock bass, the competition for food may not be a good match. histrix are very mellow eaters, unlike motoros. peacock bass are pretty aggressive feeders.

I know bart through the email, and I directed him to a "real" Hystrix breeder.

So he should be getting real Hystrix.

@Bart

The Hystrix I have are growing past the 15cm(6") disc momentarily, and they are from 30th March 2008. I understand that this is an extremely fast growth for such small rays. They were born at ~7-8cm(3") disc.

I won't put these animals with bass(or any other active fish), as they will eat all the food before the hystrix can get at it.

it depends on how many Pbass and how big they are.... large number of small ones could make feeding a problem... but if the rays out grow the pbass it could become a expensive meal... as far as mixing its your call... they both have quick growth rates so if you paid close attention as to make sure everybody is eating and water is perfect i dont see why you couldnt mix them...
