Hi guys,

This is my first post so please go easy on me. :grinno:

I have a 6" red tail cat fish and I'm thinking of getting a pair of Potamotrygon Leopoldi.

Will they live happily and comfortably together ? (The tank is big enough).

When they get too big, I'll transfer them to my outdoor pond.

Also, out of curiousity, what does LFS stand for ? Been seeing it a lot when reading about RTC and Stingrays.

Thanks guys ! :D

i would imagine the RTC would outgrow the rays and possibly make them into expensive taco snacks. usually best to keep fish that are larger than the RTC, even if fed often. just look up threads on what those guys will eat! it's insane.
a little too risky for my tastes.

Yes LFS stands for Local fish shop. Not advisable as your RTC will wipe out all the food meant for the rays before it reaches the ground.

And what kind of things get bigger than a RTC?

it's not a question of what gets bigger than an RTC in total, it's keeping an RTC with fish that are currently bigger than it, and once they are getting to the size of food, you move tankmates or the RTC to another aquarium.

it's the same as a lot of fish. at smaller sizes, they'll be less likely to eat other tankmates, and as they grow, you accommodate them all by moving them so that snacking doesn't happen.

would you honestly want an RTC in with stingrays that will cost you like 800$+ each? i sure wouldn't want to lose that much money to a single fish snack.

yes, the RTC is not even the biggest catfish in the amazon.
there are also larger catfish in asia, and the arapaima like kcameron stated. some gar, while not in body weight, can grow longer. Paddlefish. Hell, there are stingrays in both asia and south america that rival and even beat the RTC in disc width alone.

besides, we've only explored approx 10% of the amazon, who knows what else is in there that we haven't seen yet. a ton of china is unexplored/mapped as well because it gets so dense that it makes travel almost impossible.

if we're talking about anything that can live a full life in freshwater, technically a bull shark, since it can regulate its body salt content to stay alive in freshwater for its full life cycle and even successfully breed. ;)

Agreed. But, out of curiosity, is there anything that does get bigger than a RTC?

The Mekong cat fish can be huge as well.
The strongest fight I got from a fish while fishing in a pond was with a Mekong cat fish.
Relentless fight till the end. These fishes are awesome for sport fishing.
