So as my wife and I consider moving to a new apartment, I'm considering giving up my multiple tanks for one bigger one. The question becomes what do I stock? Top contenders right now would be just a bigger SA community (severums, geos and maybe a pike cichlid) or trying a Madagascar tank. Another option, though rated slightly below those 2 would be the legendary CA "community" tank which would probably be primarily vieja/paratheraps species. Top of that list would be melanura, briedohri, and regani... so 2 questions. One, which set up would you go and two, how many vieja/paratheraps would you feel comfortable putting in that size tank?

You will likely end up with more than one tank even with a big one....he temptation will get to you ultimately. ;)

I'd do SA tank but that's my own personal taste. I just feel like you have more diversity of shapes and sizes along with having plenty of biotope correct non Cichlid tankmate options to choose from.

For me it would depend on where I'm moving to/what floor I'm on. I'd rather keep multiple smaller tanks if the new place isn't on the 1st floor, just too much of a risk for me with the weight.

That being said, if you're comfortable with the large tank, I'd personally do a fairly peaceful CA/SA biotope that is nicely scaped.

Heck, I think a 180 would be big enough for me to pull off my carpintis with breeding ellioti and red tiger/rokteil severum group look. Maybe even a standard 125 provided the Carpintis is not a breeding pair and just a solo male or something.

Thanks for the responses. Sadly I can do all the SA stuff you have mrrobxc, because rays aren't legal in Texas =S also, the tank I'd be replacing are 2 125 gallons and a 75 gallon. If I'm giving them up, it won't be for just a 180 =P
