Hey

I'm currently keeping an approx 8" male Jag solo in a 4' 90G. I've just ordered him a 6' 180G which will be delivered in a month's time. Problem is, he doesn't currently fill out the 4 footer, so I'm concerned that the new tank is gonna look really empty. I've been back and forth with the idea of tank mates but I figured that now is a better time than any, seeing as I have the new tank coming. I plan to set up the new tank and leave his new tank mates in there for a week or so before I eventually introduce the jag. Correct me if I'm wrong but I figure that this way, he will be entering a new territory as opposed to seeing new fish invading his established territory. He doesn't seem to be overly aggressive - he isn't scared of my hand but never attacks me during water changes. That said, he hasn't had to share a tank in over 6 months (he was grown out with 5 siblings).
So anyway, I was hoping to throw a few non cichlid tank mates in to add little more movement and hopefully they won't get immediately murdered. A couple of options I've been thinking about...

Lima Shovelnose Cat
I've always wanted a tiger shovelnose but I'll never have a big enough tank. I've often heard that the Lima is the next best thing at a more manageable size. They currently have these at my LFS and it's the first time I've ever seen them for sale around here. Hopefully the jag wouldn't see it as too much of a threat as it would stay on the bottom of the tank.

Tin Foil Barbs
I like the idea of a few schoaling fish but these get big and I don't want to push the bio load to the limit. I'm guessing I'd need at least 4 of these?

Giant Danios
Again, I like the idea of some schoaling fish and I guess I could have a good few of these as they don't get as big as the barbs. Would these get big enough to avoid being eaten?

Open to suggestions if anyone has any other ideas? Filtration wise I will be a running an FX5 and an FX6. I will also have a decent size algae scrubber to help with the nitrates.

What you think??

Giant danio's will just be eaten so I wouldn't waste my time. Tinfoils get big and you need a big group so that will be a lot of bio load.

Lima's get as big as the jag and are pretty active not necessarily on the bottom. It could work or it could be disaster. Silver dollars may work if you can get some big enough. Problem is your jag is already 8" and not really accustomed to sharing tank space. It's going to be trial and error pretty much with something designed to eat other fish. He may except a catfish, etc....or he could viciously attack it. It needs to be able to stand it's ground without starting anything, but not big enough to be eaten.

I've seen midas, texas, fem red terrors, con's, pearsei, and pleco's as tankmates. It's really up in the air especially once the jag reaches 12"+

they could but also get large, what about large wide bar silver dollars a group of 3-5 maybe, the jag and a nice gold spot pleco. with a lima too would be a cool tank but some lima get 2ft as there is two types i think do some research on that...

I've never liked silver dollars, not sure why. The Lima is definitely the larger type, my LFS has it listed as Sorubim Lima.

i wa sthe same, now i look at em as mini pacu!-)
