Hello everyone, I am by far not looking to stock any "monster fish" but I enjoy reading your forums and learning from this website, so I'd love to hear from you guys on my tank.

I am in the near future purchasing a 75g, or 90g aquarium, which will be the new home of my adult JD currently in a 55g, and I am wanting to know what options I have as to what I could stock with my JD. I've heard that since my JD has been alone I shouldn't try to add anything. This JD has been alone for almost the entire 2015 year, but before he was in a much bigger tank with a gar, bay snook, and a Oscar (I purchased him from the owner keeping him in this set up) so I personally believe he will coexist with new tank mates just fine.

So what do you think? Should I avoid getting anything else? Or maybe only get dither fish? If I can get another cichlid or cichlids, what would you suggest? I have many I love and would like to keep, but for simplicity sake, I'll wait to hear suggestions before going on about what fish I'm looking into.
 
I'm in the middle of a similar experience with my JD right now. What I'm considering is adding dither before moving him into his new tank to see how he does with that, and then introducing the new fish to the larger tank first (since they'll be smaller, give them time to find hiding spots) and then try moving the JD over with a divider at the ready. Just my plan but I'll let other people pitch in. Oh and on the topic of adding another cichlid, I wouldn't go with more than 1 that gets JD size or temperament.
 
Hit or miss with adding something to the tank with the jd. I would think that since he isnt in the new tank he wont have time to claim it and you may get away with adding a non cichlid tankmate. Just add them to the new tank at the same time. No telling if your jd will accept a tankmate just gonna have to try it and rehome if need be

I'm only 10 minutes away from the LFS, and I work at it haha so there's no problem rehoming fish if that's the case.

What are your opinions on getting him a lady? Finding a mature female might be difficult(honestly don't know) and even then I've read they won't automatically accept the partner.
 
A female might work, but he might kill her as well. Depending on your area mature JD's are easy to find here in FL, I see a couple a week here.
 
How long did he live alone?

So am I able to get anything knowing it could be a hit or miss? Or is it practically guaranteed he won't tolerate anything else?
 
Nothing is garaunteed with mixing them.
 
So is it still okay to add fish? I don't want to be a terrible cruel owner by forcing this to work but I don't see my JD being a killer because he's not very aggressive.
 
you can only but try, and minimizedamage limitation, watch them, make it so they have a place to his or something, that's what I'd do in my personal opinion but what I say might work for some situation and not another,you just don't know
