Pothos - How do I get this into the tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking good! What kind of numbers are we looking at in terms of nitrate reduction? How many plants will it take to lower nitrates on a 100g that sits at around 40-60ppm? This is with a Marineland C530 canister and Fluval 306 for filtration and heavy stock. I do 85% water changes 1x/week. Thanks

Thanks everyone for all the posts!!! they look amazing!

How much nitrate reduction are you all getting from these plants?

How much before they start to grow? I think i left mine out on the air for too long before adding them to the tank, they seems to have gone all floppy!!!

I wish I could answer that with entire certainty.

I can tell you what I've got going on and what I'm sittint at.

The above pic of the pothos in my sump was from a couple days ago. The tank is a 90 with a 40b sump. Maybe 120-130gal system capacity. uploadfromtaptalk1420255147692.jpg
Got a big pile of africans in there. No idea how many.

The sump has a wetdry trickle tower and some sponge filters and junk in the sump. Mag9.5 pushing around 6-700 at head height. I do 50% water changes every sunday. Every once in a while I skip a week.

Its been 6 days since a water change.
Just tested the water a moment ago.

~5ppm.

I don't test nitrates often. I cant tell you what the reduction is/was. The pothos doubled in size in the last couple months I'd say. It's rampant. I have it under 2x 6500k 10w cfls.

Hope that helps? Big plant, big bio load, low nitrates. I dunno, I'm just a dumb guy who likes fish.

Thanks mudbuttjones. I wish my nitrates stayed that low, but I am absolutely going to try some pothos and I will post some before and after results. Any idea how quickly the plants start lowering nitrates?

looks amazing!!!

my nitrate is disgraceful!!!! im hoping the pothos reduces it!!

Im just going to keep adding more untill i get it to ~5ppm!!!

Last question, do you have a root system before adding it to the tank, or just chuck it in and let the roots sprout int he water?

thanks

how do i get it to do this?

the pothos I have is snipped from a normal plant....please see the first post for pics of the 3 pieces i have

It'll take time, but just leave it in water and it will start to sprout on its own. All you need to do is provide some light and keep the ambient temp on the warm side
