I just bought a pothos and broke it up and stuck it in the HOBs of my 75 gallon planted aquarium. I really like the way it looks, but i read on another forum that in low tech tanks pothos will suck all the nutrients out of the water and all the underwater plants will slowlly die. has anyone experienced this?
I really like the look but dont want my 4 year old planted tank to wither away. ill just keep track of the nitrates and see how the plants do, any opinions on this?????
and if so, what fertilizers could i add to prevent it, thanks
also, one last thing, i have a pretty huge bioload for a planted tank, i hung a light above the pothos, thinking about taking it down now, so it will grow slower?

I have philodan... philodend... philaden.... *pothos* growing in AC20s on the back of most of my tanks, including heavily planted ones. I dose with Flourish fertilizer daily. I don't think it will "suck up" all the other plants' nutrients, but you may see the new growth of everything slow a bit. Rather than thinking of it as a sort of parasite monopolizing resources, picture it as an extra person at the dinner table. Who has nice manners.

Oh and I'm fairly certain all your bacteria in your filter would starve before your plants would. That's how some people get away with "filterless" tanks. My plant heavy 10g with great lighting and co2 (no ferts) survived almost a year with no filter and a decent bio load (2 bettas, 5 danios, 5 ottos and lots of snails). More plants are always excllent. Is there any algae at all in the tank? If so, you have plenty of nutrients available for more plants

ok, that makes me feel better, i do dose with flourish and flourish excell and have diy co2 as well. i had never heard that anywhere else so i just wanted opinions, thanks. if anything, ill just add more fertilizer if it is a problem, which i doubt it will be
