I have a pothos in my hob filter I want to. Put it in my tanks with the roots growing in the water. I have South American cichlids with a cat and a bristle nose pleco, will any of them eat or destroy the roots?

Depending on the species yes they will.what fish do you have?

Yea you won't be able to have roots loose the Dempsey alone will tear the apart. What is a dwarf yellow convict? Scientific name?

My Dempsey is pretty docile and lazy though. Archocentrus nanoluteus is the yellow convict. He is pretty cool and super gorgeous with bright blue eyes

I've had pothos in all my tanks and never had any problems with any of the cichlids chewing roots or plants. Pleco might be different story

Even the adults I've had never had a problem. The only fish I remember giving me a problem was my calico convict pair. The female would eat the roots but she actually helped the plant cause when she ate most of the roots off new ones grew back and a lot thicker longer roots. It's probably the longest vine I have.

Just a FYI, a minor point , but...none or your cichlids are South American, the JD and Texas are from Mexico and US (considered part of North American)the JD and Thorichthys range can stretch south into Guatemala(Central America) and the nanoluteus is from Panama and Costa Rica, part of Central America.
And I use pothos with those, without a problem.
