Anyone have experience growing pothos plants or Chinese evergreen plants in HOB filter for filtration/ removal of nitrates ? Can you submerge them right in the tank ?

Given enough light, Pothos roots can grow to a massive size, so it may over time overwhelm even the largest of HOB filters, and clog up the impeller chamber.
Beside hanging it in tanks, I place Pothos on floating logs in the tank where the roots work their way into the wood.
.
The root above, hangs in a 24" tall tank, the fish are @ 6"-7".

Damn yah I see what your saying, that's quite the root structure.

I don't have pics like the others, but also use pothos. Mine is partially submerged and doing very well. I would recommend adding it in tank like others have said so it doesn't gum up your filter with its roots. Though if that is where you really want it you can trim back the roots from time to time.
