Could two or three pothos plants really make a dent in the nitrate level on a 125g? I am not looking at a way to skip water changes. I one to two every week, which does control my nitrates but it would be cool if i could get them even lower.

The honest answer is not likely, it depends on your stock levels and the size of plants etc... The amount of plants it takes to skip water changes onb large tanks such as yours is quite a bit. As in a planted filter of sorts that has a pretty decent amount of plants. Pothos grows well, looks nice and will help help but IME it may not make much of a dent in a 125g.
I placed pothos in my 110, heavily stocked Mbuna tank a little over a month ago. My initial response was an INCREASE in both NO2 and NO3 for the first week. The bio caught up and my NO2 is back to 0, but my NO3 is still about the same level as it was before. I'm thinking I need to add more plants and also give them more time to establish themselves.
