where my cichla are
ok, i know that the substrate i have in my tanks is not plant friendly. i kinda glanced at the stickies, but i didn't see anything that might address what i want to ask.

i think i could probably get some kind of carpet plant to grow on the driftwood, but i was thinking of potted plants, like some kind of fern or a spider plant or pothos?

my substrate is crushed coral and river pebbles and some larger rocks. and in the 180 (which is the tank i'm most interested in trying to grow plant in) i have two nice sized pieces of manzanita and a couple pieces of driftwood that i bought from John.

can i get suggestions? i'll get some full tank shots later, all i seem to have right now is shots of the algae that grew on the driftwood while i was cycling the tank and my plumbing system.. lol.

OK, here's pics.. the plants that are in there are silk plants. the third pic is the reason the tank isn't filled up all the way..

Not sure if this will answer your question, but Java Ferns will attach to Driftwood after awhile. Just tie them onto the Driftwood with some fishing string. If you want something to "carpet" the Driftwood...maybe some Java Moss? Both are easy plants.

I was considering doing something quite similar in my 90 gallon recently. Not with a carpeting plant but I know my substrate isn't something a plant could root to very well so I was considering potted. With proper lighting I don't see why it wouldn't work. Maybe a short pot for a potted plant and covering it with the rock/pebble substrate. That was my plan at least.

thanks ben.. i've had java moss before, but killed it. of course i had nothing for it to attach to and no real lighting. i think this tank might be a different story.

when i was a teenager i grew potted tropical plants.. drove my mother nuts cause ya couldn't walk through the house without walking around or tripping over one or more of my plants. kinda like my fish now.. lol.

anyway.. those are the types of potted plants i was thinking of. seems to me i remember someone trying a pothos or something similar in one of their tanks? one of my silk plants looks a lot like the spider plants that i used to have and i was thinking they would look awesome in here with a nice green carpet, at least on the manzanita.
