I've heard from many successful people with planted tanks that you can put regular old potting soil, and then cover it with aquarium gravel so it doesn't get everywhere. Is this true? And if so, what kind of sail can i use? heres an example. read the description http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbQWMnE2a6E&feature=rec-HM-fresh+div

I heard bad things-that it will turn into a mess but some people have done it.Problem is it would take forever to settle and "stay put" and also it could be contaminated with chemicals etc so be careful.I would advise sand with pea gravel and it will be just as good

it would help if I watched that 1st but kitty litter and soil just sounds like a headache to me.I personally would say B.S. to the truth of it but who knows-maybe its legit

im laughing because now you have me researching all these soil/gravel tanks on youtube

sand with pea gravel? Well how are my plants supposed to get nutrients? thats the whole point. to save money AND have a crap loada nutrients.

Theres an article in one of the last TFH mags I think....

yeah but everything in the vid is real expensive. unlike just plain old soil

You would have to add nutrients regardless eventually.

I hear ya though,(save money)I mean the fish waste etc also feeds the plants but in my experience with everything in life it just doesn't pay at times. You get a good deal,so you think, and pay twice for it later. There's an old saying,"The sweet taste of a good deal is soon replaced with the bitter taste of poor quality". Not that dirt, per say,has anything to do with that directly but like I said before,we go grab some dirt,it looks clean,we even try to wash it etc. Then the next thing is it kills everything because its got toxins or parasites, chemicals, etc etc,I mean who the heck knows whats in "dirt"anymore? Our earth is one big pollution factory at this point so anything could be in it.Pesticides.....etc.But,even after saying that to you,I would still personally try it now that I have seen it myself. I'm just up for anything at least once:ROFL:
But would not recommend it without myself trying it 1st. That's just how I am.I am not gonna lie and tell you to do something that I have never done myself.I was basically just giving an opinion. My planted tank is pea gravel and medium river rock and its doing okay.I just gotta keep my darn fish from ripping all the plants up.
