does anybody have expierence with powder coating of metal??
I'm wondering if it is fully waterproof??
How much flex it can handle and if silicone would stick to it and not harrm it.

your opinions would be appreciated..

I could give you my experiences but you will be way better off contacting the manufacturer of the brand your going to use. some specks vary greatly (saltwater?).

Now that I've said that...whatcha got up your sleeve?? Huh?...HUh?

where will you use it? silicon wouldn't harm it..it only fades in time

Hehe a retorical question dr. joe.......i'm considering building a metal tank coz i have tons of the stuff just lying around....powder coat it an silicone a front glass to it....all 3 the powder coat company's in my town wont guarantee that powder coating is water proof(not just splash proof) but they also tell me that if the coat lets water trough it would be in the corners...??so i am moment away fom starting this experiment... coz i've found no confirmation nor does anybody deny the water holding capabilities of powder coating...let me be the first to test the powder...

Difficult question to answer. First of all there are many different grades of a)powder coating, b) powder coater, c) overall prep of substrate. In my opinion I would run a few tests. Try powder coating a few single straight peices of metal and a few angled peices (this would test the powder coatings weakest point - elbows/weld points). Take the peices and put them underwater in a test tank the back yard - get them as weather beaten as possible (meaning sunlight and worst case scenario). In all reality there are a lot of powdercoat powder manufacturers out there, contact them for what you are specifically looking for and see if they can head you to someone who uses them.
Another possibility could be to go with a liquid paint that will do the same. There are tons of liquid coatings that could do the same job - Mil-spec 2part epoxy, etc.

-In my opinion:
Silicone won't harm the powder. The amount of flex on the tank would be more relative to the weld job underneath. Each powder can have it own 'elasticity' or hardness depending upon the design of the powder.

I am in no way an expert in powder, the above information is based purely on experience. I will not sign any paper swearing to this information. With that said **** I'd love to see a Sweet Ass Powder Coated Fish tank - AND BIGG TOOOOO

;) no need to hold your breath mate i'll start a thread on this experiment real soon...i had the same kinda q's as you but still cant find any1 that can answer me... so now i'll do my own R&D

There are coating materials availabe as this has been done for oilwell pipe for 40yr, with various degrees of sucess. Like conventional coating; 95% of the problems come from surface preparation.
I think you would be better off to use some industrial coating/paint. Try Carboline, Ameron, Sherwin Williams, Wisconsin Protective coatings, etc, etc. (not Rustoleum ).
