I've read about this practice alot in this forum,it is supposed to promote fast growth but i cant see how this can be healthy at all for a fish, not to mention the quality of your water must take a beating.I have never tried this practice so i am wondering if it works, can anyone share thier experience's with me so that i can learn.Thanks.:D

While it is not exactly the greatest thing for a fish it doesn't seem to hurt them really. Many people only feed a high protein diet when power feeding but you still should balance the diet out. And also a HUGE part of power feeding is power water changing. You MUST change more water when power feeding. ATLEAST twice a week.

Yes it really does work. It will work on any type of fish. Of course it will not work as good with a fish that has a naturally slow growth rate. Most people practice this on large cichlids and the such. I am trying to beef up my bass and bowfin right now with power feeding and power water changes. Also a day of fasting is always good because it purges the system and I heard it helps them grow faster. Another thing that I heard will help fish grow faster is power heads and lots of current. They always have to swim against the current and will beef up real quick.

Raise the temp too, their metabolism will speed up.

power feeding is also used in raising feeder fish and fry. It gets them to usable size in the shortest time. As stated before, power feeding is useless if the water quality is allowed to suffer. Then it is only over feeding.

When I had goldfish in my pond, I would rescue the babies and keep them in an aquarium. I did my best to keep the aquarium clean, but the water in the pond was always cleaner. The babies that I didn't remove from the pond would always grow at about three times the rate as those in the aquarium.

Power Feeding is like Steroids...it's not a good thing to do long term, but it will get you quick results. Unlike Steroids, it's not that dangerous. It's like the Atkins Diet (which I hatefrom a nutritional stand point)...it get's you quick results, but it's not the greatest thing to do. That's a better analogy.

its a great way to get a small fish big but you can still overfeed. Also like already stated, it wont really work on slow growing fish.
ex... I've had Grammodes, Frontosas and a dat vs a Cincta pike, pbass and tsn. After 2 months the slower growers barely grew an inch while the big dogs grew 2-3".

Thats feeding frozen, pellets and fresh foods about every 3-4hrs til they were full (werent interested anymore) and doing 2-3 25-40% wc a week.

After the 2 months I went to a reg daily 2-3 times a day feeding and only weekly water changes.

I now use it on my Brichardi fry to get them up to sellable size faster.

first off

power feeding (high protein food) is NOTHING like steroids

steroid, specifically Anabolic androgenic steroids are a type of synthetic steroid hormone that promote cell growth and division, resulting in growth of tissue especially muscle and bone. steroids have more to do with hormones than protein.

second

smaller fish should be powerfed since there bodies need all of these nutrients in large quanities to keep up with there fast growth rate. Its like being forced to build a structure under a certain amount of time with insuffient material. The materials MUST be in good supply :)

too many people assume powerfeeding means stuffing your fish silly several time a day

powerfeeding is feeding your fish small portions several time a day

by doing this a fish digestive system will be able to process and exract most if not all of the nutrients of its food, if you feedin them till they are full several times a day the fishes digestive system be overwhelmed and will not be able to process all this food efficently in the time given in its gut, so alot of it will come out the other side and foul the water, as some of you may complain with power feeding.

ive powerfed plecos, and of course one grew quicker than the other, but may have been a coincidence but it died before the non powerfed one, after just a couple of years. never tried since then, but have no idea if that was the powerfeeding or not
