Does anyone that owns this (Bio-Wheel Empreor 400) have a problem with a constant, very load hum/gurgling noise?

I just set up a new 70g tank and the filter is brand new, for up to 90 gallons. I have sand instead of gravel, and the water is cloudy, even after i rinsed the sand.

I am kind of relying on the filter to help remove some of the water..

Its pump is also slow. I have the water where it should be, and even added some to the canister like it said, but it just makes a really loud hum/buzz/gurgle noise and pumps only a little amount of water at a time...

Anyone know hat could be causing this? The intake hose is in place nice and snug, the water is at the level it should be, everything seems right, but something is not wrong...?

Does it look and sound like its trying to prime itself? Thats what it sounds like to me. Try pouring water into the filter and see if that works, sounds like theres not enough water in it to get the water flowing right.

Yea, thats what i ment by canister, i have poured water into it to prime it, but it still does it.. Might it be the particles of leftover sand floating around?

The water is flowing heavy right now, so thats changed, but its still noisy...

The particles of sand will make the filter make a grinding sound but not struggle to cycle the water. To me it sounds like theres a priming problem. If it was me. I would take the filter off pour out the water take the tube off make sure you put it on there right fill the filter back up and plug it back in and see what happens. If that doesn't work take the filter back and get a different one there might be something wrong with that one. I've had to do that before.

No, the water runs hard and fast now, like it should... its just the noise that im wondeing bout now...

Most power filters are generally noisy, but as mentioned by erk419 sand getting stuck in the impeller will make it a lot noisier. Let all the sand settle before turning the filter on, and don't stir any sand near the filter intake if the filter is turned on.

Let the tank sand settle. Then go and clean out the impeller area of your emp 400. It should be fine after that.

I own 3 of these filters. Love them.

Yup, sand in the housing.

Seriously, this is the best filter on the market. I have had as many as 19 running at once and have owned upwards of 25 of them. That being said, I did have one that no matter what I did with it... it was noisy. One dud out of 25 is pretty good. The noisy one is also the only one that ever failed on me. After about 10 years of use it developed a leak. I was happy to get rid of it. Keep in mind that the dud lasted 10 years. That is how good these filters are.
