i have a whisper 30 gallon power filter for my 29 gallon tank. and i also have a 40 gallon sponge filter. the sponge filter is working harder then the power filter and i have to clean the whole sponge out every week. I AM GETTING A ODER SMELL IN MY TANK AND I PUT EXTRA CARBON IN IT AND EVERYTHING AND I STILL HAVE THE SMELL. I need to find a better power filter for my tank so whats ur guyes ideas. should i get a 40 gallon filter or what. i am looking for something cheap and the filters dont cost that much.

Is it a established tank or just recently setup?
Are your ammonia and nitrite levels close to zero?
A good power filter for your tank would be a AC70.

Are you doing water changes?

Likely the powerfilter is not the reason for the smell. Answering the 3 questions above will help in solving your problem.

I have an AC70 on my 29. The water is crystal clear and no discernible odors. I agree with SMS that this is a good option for your tank. I know it seems like over-kill, but it works quite well.

ammona and both nitrates are at zero i put a new sponge filter in it lastnight and it still has the smell and a new power filter in it on wed or thursday with extra carbon

Are you normally changing 10g of water twice a week or is this a recent move because of the smell?

Do you mean nitrites? If your tank is showing zero nitrates likely there is a cycling problem. What are your nitrite levels?
