Just curious on if ya'll use the strainer tube or not? I used to have them, but in the past week I decided they were useless for larger fish (cichlids) and inhibit flow and mechanical capabilities... since taking them off, my tank has been much cleaner (mechanically). So once all my fish exceed the size of the tube (on all tanks), I'm removing all strainers....

The strainer isn't only for preventing small fish from getting sucked into the drain hose, it also prevents 'chunks' that are too large from clogging/seizing the impeller in the pump housing or clogging the drain side inlet to the filter housing.
In my large tanks, I replaced the included strainers on my FX5s with pond strainers.

Yea always have the strainer on there, my friend lost his albino senagalus that way :(

Good idea Oddball, did you build that or buy that? I need to get one.

I have tried going w/o the strainers and it seems something always happens (dead feeder goes sideways against tube, plant material jammed pump) so I said never again. I do use faom filters on some of them instead of the strainers, I just have to keep checking them for clogging.

I bought them from aquaticeco.com. They were like $14. They're 4" in diameter with 2" connectors. I just added PVC reducers to each one to get them down to the size of the drain hose fittings.

Cool thanks Phil, I think I am just going to build my own though.

I might not even need the mesh, it is for a pond so I could get away with some foam or something on it.
