Ok this isn't really a "monster" project, but because i'm a poor college student i'm sticking with my ten gallon dwarf puffer tank. I have more than enough filtration, but i really like the concept of a sump. ANYWAYS, I've checked around online, and the cheapest pump i can get is 20 bucks without shipping, and i spotted a $15 power head at walmart that gets 170gph, which is way more than i really need for a ten gallon with a dp and a couple shrimp. Does anyone know if the head height would be large enough to make a diy sump? I'd love to make a mini one before i get my tank i'm planning for in the future.

do you think i could return the powerhead if it didn't work? its a little of 3', anyone have any experience converting a powerhead into a pump, and any ideas on where to find a hose? home depot?

Return the powerhead to a store? No. It's electrical, usually once you've used or installed it, it's all yours. I dont' see why your powerhead wouldn't work, given the size of your tank. I have used 10 dollar water fountain pumps for sump set ups before. I agree with WeakSrt, grab some hose n see what happens. Pushing water through 5ft of hose is easier on a pump than pushing water through 10ft of hose. But again I think you will be fine unless your sump was on the otherside of the room haha. Oh and yes hose is available at any hardware store, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. While you're there, check their water fountain pumps. You might find a better buy.

I use a maxi jet 1200 to age and dechlorinate water before getting pumped into my tank. It does a quick job of pushing the water into the tank (Up about 48 inches) It also pushes the water hard through a modified eheim spraybar to further dissipate chemicals and de gas the water.

Its not a sump but it shows that it can definitely work :)
