I have a 180 gallon SA cichlid tank set up with UG filtration using a NU-CLEAR canister filter. My substrate for the past two years has been fine aragonite/ sand. The system barely functions anymore and the filter is a POS that consistently gets clogged, compromising my water chemistry much more frequently than it should be. Anyway, I decided to switch it up. I heard UG filters are sub-par and a thing of the past so I just ordered a Fluval F5X canister filter. I know this model can easily serve as adequate filtration for my 180g but my question is will I have to add any additional equipment to my system to provide my cichlids with enough oxygen? The appearance of my set up is pretty natural so I'd like to not have to put any more machinery into my tank, particularly no cheap air stones or tacky looking bubbly diver things. The reason I went with UG filtration initially was because it was invisible but obviously sufficient oxygen is a priority. Is anyone familiar with the Fluval F5X? If so, do you need to incorporate power heads to achieve aeration? And if so, do you just direct them towards the water surface to break up the tension and release oxygen? Please let me know your thoughts as I am inexperienced with any filtration system other than UG canister and smaller hang on the back style filters. Thanks!

If you point the output of the fx5 toward or even to the top that SHOULD break the surface enought... Even ripples will do the job

Or have a small bubbler and put it under a rock or cave or sonethinh so that only one bug bubble comes up intermitently as opposed to multiple small bubbles constantly

Well give or take pretty much... I mean the more fish the more airation your gonna need... Unless you have like plants and ****... Hw many cicjlids are in there

you could try the DIY spray bar mod for the fx5.. the videos supplied shows adequate surface movement and flow within the tank. The mod should be pretty easy and relatively inexpensive. I have 3 powerheads located throughout my 80 tank which will be going right in the new 180 and I just hide them with my rocks.
