We are going to experience a 4-5 hour power disruption in out neighbourhood today. We have been warned about it so thats nice. However I was wondering what to do with my fish. My bacteria media I want to place inside tank correct? Anything else I need to do to help everyone in that tank stay healthy and avoid any concerns when all returns?

F/W right?

Correct, do a 25% W/C if you have time and if you can get a battery powered air pump that will help tremendously. If worst comes to worst get a clean water pitcher and scoop out water and pour it back in (with a little spashing) for 5min. every half hour, to help with aeration and off gassing.

Bait shops (walmart too) have oxygen tablets for keeping bait alive that will help too.

And don't feed.

Good luck.

Keep us posted.

Thanks Dr Joe you are super helpful. I think I am going to run down to a petland five minutes away when they open in three hours and grab battery powered pump but all the other stuff I will do. I hadn't even thought of stirring the water on my own but it makes sense.

Again thank you for your help

I live in Ohio, and we had a serious outage like a month ago to the day. We were out for a whole week. My tanks were off for about 13 hours until I was able to buy a generator the next day. So I think 4-5 hours will be just fine. By the way, I lost not 1 fish during the outage.

rucus you got lucky i was out for 6 days and i keep lg siting rays. i also got a generator after the third day and a ton of water changes. i got very lucky. no loss. you should be fine. good luck.

I gotta ask why the big power outage. I know ours is transmission line upgrade and maintenance but like said just a few hours. Why 6 days of no power thats insane what if that happens in the cold of winter?

across most of ohio on sept 15th hurricane gustov winds ripped through here and downed trees. over 2 million in ohio were without power for at least 4 to 7 days. it was one of the worst losses of power ever in ohio.

That could be difficult if they power is out:ROFL:

Anyways, when Hurricane Ike hit, i was without power for a couple days. I was fortunate and had a generator to run the pump, but only for a few hours a day. I think the main problem will be aeration, depending on how stocked you are, and if you have plants. If possible, a daily 25% water change would probably get you through, even without aeration;)
