I was wondering how long would it take for a fluidize bed filter to turn toxic in the event of a power outage?

Anyone out there running a power back up that you would recommend?

I`ve read about canisters that went toxic in an hour.
Guess it would depend on the state of the media.
What I worried about was when power returned, the pump would just blow a hole through the sand and not get it into suspension.
I tried shutting power off, let it sit, powered back up..
Sure enough, blew a hole right through the sand.
It now sits on a shelf in the garage.

I was curious too when I read this last night so I killed mine. Less than 24 hours later it has obvious pockets. The sand in this filter it 100% white. The dark areas in the sand bed appear to be the pockets I have read about as well. I moved it to another tank and fired it back up. It took less the 10 seconds to fully fluidize again. (I use a lighted grain sand than FBF spec because it used to always stall on my low flow pump)

As the old saying goes, pics or it aint happen...

Thanks for the info guys! I'm probably gonna get some kind of back up power just in case, don;t wanna blow the damn thing and make it useless.
