Hey all,
I'm currently at school on the eastern shore of MD and the national weather service is calling for 2-3 FEET of snow this weekend:eek:. The school sent out an email saying to prepare for the possibility of power outages.
I currently have a 55g running with 1 3" Blue Gourami. Are there any measures I should take to ensure he survives should a power outage occur? I know it's only a $5 fish so it wouldn't be an expensive loss but i would still like to prevent death if possible.
Thanks in advance!

get a battery powered air pump!
see if you can pick up a small generator that charges up using electricity and then you can run your filters on it incase

Battery powered air pump is the way to go. Also put your bio media from your filter in a mesh bag in the tank so it doesn't die from lack of flow through the filter. There is a sticky about surviving power outages in the "Setup and Filtration" forum.

umm gourmi don't need air pump, they can breath from water surface if oxygen level is low, and i don't think it can affect anything if your 55g is housing just one fish, it should survive for 2 weeks with no water change. (i know because my friend and i own a fish store, and we have power outage quite often due to ignorant landlord)

In case of emergency, use 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide, the stuff you find in your first aid kit for every 40gal. It will help the fish get more "air". Works as a TEMPORARY solution to oxygen deprivation.

Best thing to do if a power outage occurs is to distrupt the tank or fish as little as possible. I read an article about this in Aquarium Fish International. Do not feed the fish do not open the tank ect.

thanks guys, yea, gouramis do have the ability to breathe from the surface, so he should be good (thank God cause there's no lfs to get a BPAP from), I do have a lot of hydrogen peroxide but being at a college, i'm sure it'll be a priority of the power company, just wanted to make sure the gourami would be ok, i'm new to this, lol.
