I woke up tues morning hearing my filter (ac 110) not filtering properly. it wasnt running dry but did not have enough water in it to suck properly. My alarm clock was blinking 1:32 am (power outage). look in my 40 gal pleco tank and all are doing very badly with 2 that had already stopped breathing. 4 in. reg bn and albino bn and 5 in. royal were doing mildly ok. 3-4 in. king tiger and snowball plec both upside down, barely breathing, knocking on deaths door. 8 in. L240 gallaxy and my lil' 2 in. blue panaque not breathing at all. I fix the filter and then start taking some water out of the tank to make the waterfall stronger and put some air back into the water. I watch the tank for about 40 min. and here is the strange part, out of nowhere the galaxy starts breathing again(this is after 40 min of me watching, dont know how long he was not breathing in total). really slow and shallow at first. 20 min later he flips himself over and starts twitching and moving around somewhat. Not the same story for the blue panaque-Rip. Within a few hours all plecs make a full recovery and return to there normal behavior. But my galaxy kinda sits and stares aimlessly and i have yet to see him eat. So he is brain dead from lack of oxygen, right? If he is not eating how long should i wait to euthanize him and how do I?

yes, i realize a power head would have aided in avoiding this mess.

Oh man that sucks major. I don't know about euthinizing. I'd wait it out to see if they get better. I'm sorry though :(

I had my own disaster last saturday morning!! All hell broke loose among my convicts! Agghh!!! One died!

I would give it a few days and see if it catches up, it's not going to be right away. A fish can go quite a few days without eating and be fine. If it comes to where you have to euthanize it, do a search on clove oil here. Seems to be the best/easy way besides bashing it's head in.

Power outages have always been a filtration worry for me, so I just switched to canisters.

How does that help ? I think sponges hooked to battery back up air pumps would be the way to go but when the power goes out a canister and a HOB both stop flowing or creating oxygen... Also the bacteria will die rather rapidly when stagnant in a canister maybe not quite as rapid as a bone dry non self priming HOB filter. But rapid enough....

I don't recall saying anything about during the outage. Do you?

His problem posted was the filter not running after it came back on. I have had this problem with hob's and sumps before, hence my post.

thanx everyone. I was planning to wait a couple weeks to see if the galaxy eats then decide further action. Just dont want to watch a fish starve to death.

sorry to hear about the L239s... this is a fish i have finally given up on.. lil buggeres are just way to delicate

yup girl interrupted. born and raised in so cal. how/why did your convict go?

i hear ya chester, but the lil blue guys are soo cool lookin though

I guess I'm lucky I normally would wake up as soon as power is cut. However the new house I'm at is not as noisy as the old house so I may not notice it.

Also you just have to wait it out with the plecos. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water and are left alone(no stress).
