I been wanting to put some kind of back up in my tanks. With the money that we spend on these rare and expensive plecos, I think its necessary to have back up.
What kind of back up do you have or any idea? We rarely have power outtage that last longer than an hour but I still want a back up.

I know recumbent and other members have some serious collection, do u have a back up? Maybe battery operated aerator that kicks in if there is outtage?

I have a monster battery back up that will run air pumps for quite a few hours. My next step is going to purchase a generator sometime in the near future to have a back up for my back up. We get some wicked storms here in Kansas so power outages are fairly common in my neck of the woods.

I have 7 battery backup systems (2 are 10kWh that can last a week for vacations), 2 gas generators (4000Watt and 9000Watt), 9.4 kw of solar and a 24 kWh battery in my electic car (Leaf). They are worth every penney for the piece of mind they give me. I once lost >$7000 in fish which is bad enough, but many rare plecos take years to find or grow out and it is a crime to not properly protect such rare beauties.

Do you have a natural gas line going to your house? If so, you may want to consider a natural gas generator. Though it's expensive (price of a small car), the advantage is that it can kick in automatically. So if you're on vacation, and there's a power outage, you don't have to worry about turning on the generator. Another advantage is you can run other things, like your refridgerator, etc, off this.
But if you have only short power outages, and stay home all of the time, a gasoline generator is more cost effective. I've heard of some people attaching a computer/home office battery backup to their aquarium (http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=29). I tried it, but the battery didn't have enough juice to run the filters for enough time; also the battery needed to be replaced after about 2 years. I didn't think it was worth it; but then again, I tried the cheapest model for my 2 display tanks.
