When I got my tank, I got it as a gift for fixing my neighbor's green pond water. She gave me a 75 gallon tank, 2 power heads, and a UGF. I hate UGFs so I put it in my back room but I saved everything for it. I used the powerheads for my current setup and they run great but they are older ones without sponge filters and always get junk on them. So, tonight I had a great idea. I took the old lift tubes and put them in the bottom of the powerhead and then at the bottom of the tube I put one of the heads and the carbon cartridge thing from UGFs. It is working now. Has anyone done this before. I think it's a good idea and it circulates water from the bottom of the tank to the top and it goes through carbon and now I can see if stuff is builting up on the intake because it is clear and faces the front of the tank only. Also, it gives my dat twice as many things to hide behind. Also, if the fish want to pick stuck food off of the intake, they aren't getting thrown by the current.
but I do not know if it will work. I know that it doesn't make a difference to me becaue I have two biowheel 350s and 2 sponge filters in conjuction with the powerheads. I was just tired of the powerheads sucking up food and holding it where the fish can't pick it off ( yes, my fish are good about cleaning up their house) now the intake is at the bottom of the tank, and it comes out at the surface. I might have better luck taking apart the UGF cartridge and cutting a fluval polishing pad/HBH fliter media in it instead. PM how it goes, and share it on the boards!
