I have a 140gal planted tank with about 18 plants in it as well as 5 red bellies 2 gold piranha and 3 bushy nose plecos. I am new to planted tanks but i know that disturbing the surface of the water releases CO2, but how are my fish to get oxygen without disturbing the surface? i know that plants release oxygen as they consume CO2, but is it enough? and if my plants stop growing for another reason, will my fish suffocate? Well i bought a powerhead and turned the bubbles on, but im not sure if this was the right thing to do or not... i dont really care for the way the bubbles look swirling all around the tank, but it isnt that big of a deal. how will this effect my plant? it must be bringing in some fresh C02 with the air right?

Surface agitation with co2 injection=bad. Surface agitation w/o co2 injection=good.

What about with Flourish Excel?
Will any of the benefits of excel go away with surface agitation?

just get as much surface agrigation as you can do not worry about the plants they will adapt in time.

Without knowing the plants in the tank, that is a dangerous statement, as well as in many cases wrong. Plants won't adapt, they die.

I have tried to keep plants with little success. I do use a powerhead for circulation but do not agitate the surface very much. I do not use CO2 injection. My plants tend to turn yellow and die over time. I am using 395W on a 165 gallon angel/severum tank.

Is it possible to keep plants without extra CO2?

Most certainly. You just have to pick the right plants, keep up on maintenance, and fertilize regularly.
