It was silent when I got it a few weeks ago. Tried turning it on today and it makes a horrible humming/clanking sort of sound. It's fine if it's floating in the middle of the water, but if the powerhead is attached to the glass it's noise rivals that of a HOB that just pulled up a piece of sand...I thought maxijets are usually supposed to be quiet, any solutions? :O

I looked at the impeller and there was nothing stuck on it. The flow rate also seems to be reduced a bit...

Did you check the intake tube? Also, if you're using the suction cups on the plate setup, sometimes that can rattle against the glass/acrylic. But it shouldn't be happening only 2 weeks in.

Have you tried running it out of the water to hear what it sounds like? You can run it dry for a few seconds without damage. If you hear it clanking and whatnot, there's probably a problem. Pull the impeller out and see if the magnet at the end has "exploded," -- you'll know if you see it. It happened on one of my filters once. Caused quite a racket.

the magnet seems fine

i'm using suction cups but i moved them to another "side"(can be attached on 3 different sides) and it still has that noise. i tried moving it around more and it's still silent if floating in the middle of the water :(

my other powerhead got a bit noisy too
i put it near the bottom of the tank for half a minute. there'

s a bit of gunk in the tank, including floating pieces of filter floss. i cleaned off the impellers but is there a chance some gunk is stuck past the impellers?

also took pictures of both impellers(white one is maxijet)
