WELCOME TO MFK!

I have had two Marineland Penguin 1140's for about 10 years now and they still work as efficiently as when I first purchased them. I'm truly pleased with their performance.Their rate of flow is rated at 300 gph. I used both pwr. heads, but in two separate 75 gallon rectangular tanks when I had my Oscars. I used one in each tank due to the excessive waste O's are famous for. They worked great for each tank. Maintenance on these are minimal. once a month, depending on waste load of tank.

A real factor which sold me is the 1140's have an adjustable directional type nozel you can use and direct the flow where it's needed. But to get a cross flow you might want to use a smaller size and put two pwr. heads in as opposed to just one. They do have them and they are efficient for their size and gph output. You can find them by typing "Marineland Pengiun Powerheads" in your google title box and then click search.

I forgot to mention, the Marineland Pwr. Heads are pretty common in most retail pet shops, (e.g. PetCo, PetSmart, etc.) I picked up mine at Wal-Mart. Less expensive than a regular store like PetSmart. But that was 10 yrs. ago too, so I'm not to sure what they run now, but worth looking into. Hope this has helped. Good luck in your purchase.

Thanks for the reply. I will look into those. Does anyone know what the turnover for a powerhead should be? Should i stick to 'round 300gph?

Different sized powerheads are rated at gph which is their turn over rates. You need to check the Mfgr. sizes to determine what size you want by the amount of gph turnover they each have. It depends if you want a really strong current to get to your dead spaces around your wood pieces and how much current flow your resident fish can tollerate. If they can tollerate a strong current, go with a powerhead that can turn a large volume over to meet that need, like the 1140's I mentioned. If they can't tollerate a strong current, then I would go with something a bit smaller in size and gph turnover rates. You'll have to look it up to determine your needs.

I have a aquaclear on my 75. I really do not like it.....noisy but does a good job of water circulation. I just bought a couple Hydor Koralia for my other tanks and I am preety happy with these. They are super quite and come with a wide range of GPH depending on what you want. I would go with the Hydor myself.

I was considering the Koralia 1 or nano 425. I would like it to be as compact as possible while still getting good movement. I plan to add more live plants and pulling the silk and plastic. Plus I think the cudas would like some current.
