I just set up a 55 gallon aquarium. I have an xp4 filtering it. The spraybar helps with surface agitation on one half of the tank, but the other side is pretty still on the surface. I don't want to strong a flow that would push my fish all over the place. I'm not really that well versed on what powerhead to use or placement. I'd prefer to use a maxi jet or koralia. I have a green sunfish about 5 inches, 3 cichlids about 5 inches and 2 3 inch striped raphael catfish. The cichlids are only temporary until I get a new big tank for them, since my 210 gallon I had them in broke. Thanks.

I forgot to say I'd like to use a circulation type pump. I see the maxi jet set up as a circulation pump is 500 gph. Is that too much?

If it is just surface agitation that you want, an air pump and air stone will agitate the surface quite a bit.

aquaclear 30 with asponge filter attached might work out for you

Well I ordered a maxi jet 600, so I'll see how it works out. It pumps 750 gph when set up as a circulation pump. Hydor suggested their 750 gph koralia for a 55, so I went based off of that.

I use the Aquaclear powerheads.

I would have gone with the koralia evolution 750 myself... Great powerhead.

I considered that one. I had heard good things about the Maxi jet as well. I know I needed something, because last night I could see stuff kind of just floating around not making its way to the filter intake. Plus I'd like the added surface agitation. I think when I get a new tank to replace my 210 that broke I'll get a koralia and maxi jet, so I can compare.

Consider a rena xp4 is rated for a 265 gallon aquarium you'd think there might be more water movement.
