So im planning to make my own overhead filter, but I need some help about powerhead. I need a powerhead that can run 400 to 500+ gph I already searched the internet and the forums, but can't find anything. Can anyone suggest a brand or model? Thanks.

I dont know for sure about the size/flow, but the Hydor Koralia Powerheads always seem to get rave reviews around here. I use Hagen/AquaClear brand, but I dont run that kind of flow...

Although I am a big fan of the Koralia powerheads, the water fans out from them as opposed to being pushed in a single direction... these will not work well in place of a pump...

It sounds to me like you are looking for a water pump, not a powerhead...

They are basically the same thing with one primary difference... most/all aquarium pumps/powerheads use a magnetic driven impeller... meaning the motor turns a magnet... and the impeller has a magnet on it... the attraction between these two magnets make them turn in unison... but if/when something causes restriction or backpressure on the impeller, the magnets simply slip a revolution. This allows the motor to continue spinning at it's given speed thus not causing wear on the motor...

So what's the basic difference between a powerhead and a pump... the size of the magnets... Naturally this will vary from model to model...

This is why a water pump is rated to perform at a higher head pressure than a powerhead... because the small magnets on the powerhead slip much easier than the larger magnets on the water pump...

Personally, I started using SEN brand pumps (from Kensfish.com) over a year ago and have ben very happy with them... they have a 300 & a 500 gph model...

It would be nice to have more info on the idea/design/intended purpose of the powerhead...
I'm planning to connect it to a over head filter that im making, so it's something that can pick up dirt at the bottom of the tank if possible.

So it will be mounted in the canopy where the filter will be?... and the intake will be at the bottom of the tank?... and will have to lift the water up about 2' ?...

The more detail you offer the better the responses you will get...

Yeah something like that, but I don't have a canopy so it will be put at the top of the tank itself supported by a couple of woods to stabilize it. I found out that pumps are more cheaper, but gives more GPH not like a powerhead that's more expensive with the same GPH of the pump.
