To increase current some fish like stronger current. I use them in a few of my tanks, the ones with messier fish. It helps to keep debris off the bottom so the filters get it and the tank stays cleaner.

If you use the venturi option on most powerheads, it is an aid in aeration because it keep the water surface agitated, preventing film buildup.

Most riverine cichlids prefer current, and it has been suggested that current sometimes lessens aggressiveness in those species.
 
I have a circulator fan blowing straight at the top, never had film nor oxygen problems, fish love it

You can also run a prefilter on most of the so you will also have added extra mechanical filtration

I used a powerhead when I had my Oscar. He seemed to like it. If you aim it near the bottom as others have said, it mixes up the waste so it can reach a filter intake.
