Where eva theres Cichla!!!
now,

i only have a small tank in comparrison to alot of u guys...it's 4x18x18, and because i have fish semi large fish i was really worried bout my filtration...so i went out and bought a 1,400 ltr and hr powerhead! i attached a platic pipe to the bottom of the powerhead and drilled around 30-40 holes all the way up, then i got a opiece of sponge and put the plastic in the sponge and away i went...from personal experience powerheads ahve it all over cannister filters...this powerhead clean my tank 6 times every hour and it shows...

What do u think...cannisters or powerheads?

as the only filter?? canister.

this powerhead n sponge setup, cleans my tank for better than my eheim cannister filter ever did, i spose i've never owned a fluval or any other kind of cannister filter tho...

Sorry ... I may be being bird brained, but I don't get how your filtration works.

I thought powerheads were simply to increase the circulation in a tank. How does a pipe filled with sponge attached to a powerhead even begin to compete with an Eheim cannister?

JB

P.s. I'm not trying to shoot your idea down, just wanna find out how it works...

i,dont,understand,how,its,better,than,a,eheim,i,see,it,helping,a,little,bit,for,mechanical,and,some,bio,but,not,being,better,than,a,eheim

my,appologise,in,advance,for,all,of,these,,,,,,,my,space,bar,is,broke

A large sponge filter can be very good for bio filtration, and decent for mechanical, provided it's cleansed every few days in aquarium water. The only problem that it's in the tank itself, and looks very unnatural....

That sucks your space bar is broke.

He has a sponge that is over a pipe that has holes in it. So when the power head sucks up water it has to travel through the sponge then the pipe to get the the power head. So all the debris in the tank will get stuck to the sponge.

Then when you want to clean it you just take the sponge of and clean it and reatache it.

It bassically works like a sponge filter with an air pump but better.

Although IMO I don't think it would work better than a canister.

whenever you clean it you will lose a ton of biological filtration.
it would be a great secondary filter but I wouldnt use it as the main filter...maybe you can fill the canister with bio filtration and use the powerhead and mechanical filtration.
