today I purchased two powerheads basically because I just like to purchase stuff for my tanks. One of them does 750gph the other 270gph. I would like to place one in my 75 gallon, I'm assuming the 750 is the better choice for that. However, I'm having difficulty figuring out what size tank the 270 is best suited for. I've got the options of 56, 55, 45, 37, 20, 10, and 5. Suggestions?

What is your objective? Are you using them for current, on UG filters, aiming water toward your filters? I think the 270 would work on the 37 and up. IMO, it would be way too much current for the smaller tanks. What brands are the power heads? I always use Marineland Penguin 1140's (300 GPH).

750 seems like a lot of current for a 75, all coming from one direction.

My lfs has a 1,050 gph lowercase (Koralia) in a 75 and after seeing how it performs in there, I definitely won't put anything smaller than that in my 75.

The LFS's may be a bit worn. That is a whole lot of flow for 75. That kind of flow on an underground filter would damn near create a down draft. lol.

Sample conversation.

Friend: Why do your fish swim up all the time?

You: If they don't they get sucked into the gravel.

I run 2 koralia 4's on my 5' 100 gal. The flow pattern is super wide and doesn't travel very far along the length of the tank. I would use the big one on the 75 all day long.
