Hi.. I have a question. What type of shrimp do you guy use to feed your tiger datnoid? the supermarket near by my place has both fresh water and salt water shrimp available. Would this matter? also, I tend to get the ones over the counter, not the frozen ones from the freezer section..

what about you guys?

I feed jumbo market shrimp cut into appropriate sized pieces. I feed with the shell on from time to time too. The shell is loaded with amino acids.

Be sure to ask your butcher if the pawns that you are buying haven't been previously frozen, you'd be suprized...

And if it is?

I buy frozen shrimp in a box.. i think its better this way.. what do you think?

Shrimp (saltwater) or prawns ( freshwater ) will be good either frozen or fresh. If it has passed inspection to be sold as human food It will be perfectly safe and healthy for your fish. You should still try to feed a varied diet of course :)

The majority of shrimp that is caught on shrimp boats is instantly cleaned and frozen just like on crab boats. Most of the time they stay out at sea for too long to keep them fresh.

Remember to save some for yourself too

i use fresh water shrimps, the big one with no head on it already (we don't use the head and it only adds up to the weight that you pay). I always freeze them first to make sure all the bacteria and other bad stuff is dead. peal it, cut the dirt on the body and chop it down to datnoid's bite size. i consume 1/2 lb for two feedings. as you can see.. i have 17 datnoids and two big bichirs. :)

I do belive that the thiamin is what is depleted when frozen...still googling for refferences...
It's always good to vary the diet and add vitamins if you feel that it's nessasary

i really don't know if it does take of the vitamin out of it if it was frozen. but one thing that i know, all the market shrimps are frozen then defrosted for people to buy. the only live one is the shrimps in the tank. i know this for a fact since i worked with large food distributors before. :) i really hope the vitamin is not lost. i just freeze them for 4 days max... maybe if it was more than a month? freezer burn? but again.. i'm not sure.;)
