I just ordered some praziquantel to hopefully cure a fish louse problem in a small pond. They probably came in with feeders or locally caught fish. Good reason to set up a quarrantine tank, which is in the works. Affected fish include JD's and a big yellow bullhead cat. I've done some research and understand the regimen for repeated treatment to kill the newly hatched out lice.

My question is: how will a bullhead cat be affected by this medication? Any experience or advice on this will be greatly appreciated.

I've used Jungle's Parasite Clear, which contains praziquantel, diflubenzuron, metronidazole, & acriflavine, per package directions on both my native tadpole madtoms & silver spotted bullhead, as well as an assortment of synodontis cats, w/ great success. Parasites went bye-bye w/out any harm occuring to their "naked-skinned," catfish hosts.

Praziquantel is too weak for fish lice IMO. Treat all the fish in contact with the affected ones. Use organophosphates such as trichlorfon or dimilin. Remove the adult lice with forceps or tweezers and dab the wounds with iodine solution. This step is a must as adults will need higher concentration of organophosphates and this is best avoided as organophosphates are highly toxic. Use a small swab of cotton to do this job. The organophosphates will focus on destroying the juvenile and emerging juvenile lice.

Great info. Good to know that the prazi won't kill my naked cat at the recommended dosage.
Will try to remove the attached adults by hand and treat the whole system to kill juvie lice.
Thank you both, this is exactly what I was hoping to find out.
