I was bs'ing with a few guys at work about asian aro's and how they were banned back in 75-76' and that its a shame. One guy said, what if you had AA pre-ban (CITES) would they still be illegal and confiscated?

I thought that was a good question. Any thoughts?

Also to expand on that theory, as all knows that aro's can live a long time if taken care properly, what if people that had/have them pre-cites, spawned baby aro's and kept the cycling going thru the years, can they legally sell them?

Boring day at work and just thought of this. :naughty:

if they had the same species pre-ban. keeping it prolly isnt an issue. but re-selling these "spawned" babies when almost noone else can achieve this will deffinatly not be allowed. there BANNED from the US. as in, if u get caught with one, its gone. not "oh did u own it before 1975" or any bs like that. no way to prove it. united states of america banned it and that's about that. no loop holes really. just own one or dont, ur choice. but if caught with one, pay the consiquences

Yeah I figured as much. Hey can't blame a guy for hoping to beat the system. :naughty:

just because you had them before the ban does not mean you can keep them. i know this only because i am friends with local zoo people and law enforcement. at the zoo they have pets that became illegal and people turned them in. i asked my cop friends and they too said you will still be considered breaking the law. just like when certain guns get banned they too must be turned in, same goes for fish.

ignorance is not a valid excuse for any judge. just my .02

so if a fish you had becomes illegal you have to turn it in??? I dont know about that. I heard that if you have a snakehead before the ban its A Oh kay to keep it?

It would be hard for someone to breed their pet arowana unless they lived in a warm climate and had a pond at their disposal. I am trying to make my silver redder by feeding it lots of krill since I will most likely never own a red Asian Aro. I kind of like the snake like caudal of the silver anyway.

Guns and aro's? Different analogy. Firearms are registered, or should be depending on the gun dealer being shady or legit. LEO's can and will trace firearms and any of them that are on the "ban" list can be tracked down. Basically its based on the good faith system, most legit owners will "reluctantly" give it up, if not they will be getting a visit from the local LEO. Aro's or any fish species is hard to track. Only way LE will know about you possessing one is if someone gives you up.

I'm not talking about having a panda, mexican bobcat in your home or any of the "noticable" endangered species. Having endangered fish species in your home IMO is not "noticable" unless you have friends/relatives with a big mouth.

But you're right, it is a gamble one takes if in possession of such species.

But honestly, how many will give up their silvers/blacks, jardinis, motoro if they ever fall onto the endangered species?

I'd bet it'll be 80% nay, 20% yea. :naughty:

No doubt breeding them (asians) are difficult here in the States, but if there's a chance someone would attempt to try so, but its all hypothetical.

But its still a shame that after 30 years its still on the list for the USFWS but our Northern bro's can get it. :irked:

Crustman, how's that working out for you, feeding the silver lots of krill to "redden" it? :grinno:

I tthink with the snakeheads tehy have a grandfather clause, but you can't breed them or cross state lines with them, Nor sell them to anyone else.

From what I have read on the forums, if you are caught with an asian, it will be destroyed. Which makes no sense to me, because the whole purpose of the ban was to protect an endangered species. :screwy: But what do I know, I'm just a civilian, not a "know it all official".

I agree it does not make sense to destroy them. At least let it be displayed in public aquariums etc. as a form of education etc.
