If I stick a sponge prefilter on the intake of the quiet one pump, would that be enough to keep the bio media clean. I have other plans for the main mechanical filtration.

Probably not.
Those sponges are designed to keep the impeller stopping debris out of the pump, not clean the water.

Agreed. They will stop the big stuff, but smaller debris will get into the system.

I clean bio media by syphoning it not rinsing it (assuming its submersed in a sump) this way the bacteria clings to the media but the poop comes right out.

Well I guess I may end up using the same sump setup I guess.
