As I am new to this, I read alot here about people who have had problems with fish, where they get hurt, sick, etc. which makes me wonder one thing...

What would I do if something like this happens to one of my fish in the future and I only have one tank at home.

(There is no option in the near future to set up even the tinest of tanks)

Thought I would ask BEFORE something happens rather than when I'm faced with it...

Actually pretty much anything that holds water cuold be used as an quarantine/hospital tank.If you get greif over it just say this is a temporary
thing.Your other option is to treat the fish and the rest of the tank-Anne

i only have one tank and cant set up a 2nd now. i treat the whole tank. if its bumps, scrapes, torn fins etc, i use melafix and pimafix. not as harsh as the other commercial chemical based products. if its something like ich or parasites then the whole tank needs treated anyway so there is no getting around that.
i dont know with bacterial ailments though as ive never had trouble with that yet. i would guess with that scenario i would force the 2nd tank issue with the wife if it would save a fish.
if its stress related then dividers are the answer to those of us with one tank.

or just research the fish and go with acceptable tankmates. if one of my fish gets bad enough to kill another fish i get rid of him or the one getting beat up.
but on the sick part if it happens in your main tank you are going to want to treat the main tank too eitherway.

Thanks for all the advice.

Good to know, all of this very good to know. I do have a spare tank (old one that I upgraded) which I am supposed to be busy selling, but the bf already has quite firmly said ONE tank. Thats it. No more. So....

SO far everyone gets along good, but just had a minor worry.

With plastic tubs, how do you filter and keep it warm?? just throw a heater in or?

i keep an extra heater for situayions such as this. also i keep regular aquarium salt in my tanks to help avoid most illness due to lost scales and such. as far as filtration in the tote you don't want any type of carbon filtration in any tank you are medicating as it will remove the meds.keep a small filter w/bio foam for these instances.

I would use tubs.

rubbermaid tubs are WONDERFUL for qtanks/hospital tanks...
