preference in endi endi nigeria vs. guinea or vice versa

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
with the vast majority of P. e. endlicheri available nowadays are being captive bred/mass produced, the distinction might not be discernible anymore. unless you are indeed getting a certified WC fish.

both are nice looking.....

guinea seems to have a really flat head.

and the nigerian are the chads (per Toyin) seem to have a taller more rounded head.

i like them both. but if i could only choose one i would pic the guinea because it looks so different from the others:)

my personal favorite is from nigeria (i think), but apparently only some of them have that head profile i really like. and like xrayz said, according to toyin, the 'nigerian' ones are sometimes from chad, so maybe thats why? honestly i'm confused lol all i know is that i know it when i see it, but i don't know whether its from nigeria, or chad, or an individual thing, and i know i haven't seen it on the other variants. sorry i guess i didn't answer you at all haha

my 'volta' sp. aff. variant have the high dorsal fin, large tail fin eventhough it is a female, and higher but narrower head, the body is also high and narrow, more aggressive. My (now so-called) 'nigeria' have flat and wide head, average dorsal fin and smaller tail fin (possibly due to being nipped), flat body but wide from top.

I'm like infblue, I'm confused. Mine don't fit x-ray description perhaps it's the individual thing. We can only hope the collectors and the sellers provide as much info and as accurate as possible so the aquarists can draw some similarity based on observation and perhaps come to a conclusion about what a certain species should look like from a certain region.

I'm planning on getting some 'guineas' and a 'koliba' variants. Will keep you guys updated. Thanks infblue and xray for your comments

yeah individual differences always make things a bit tricky....in general though we can distinguish between volta, guinea, and perhaps chad to an extent.

what i was confused on was whether the one i like is nigeria or chad. i know it has to be one of the two, but i've seen specimens of both that don't look like it. the fact that some 'nigeria' are sometimes 'chad' and vice versa probably contribute to this confusion. anyway i'm thinking the one i like is more likely a nigeria.

good luck on your new purchase. btw the 'koliba' is not an endlicheri variant.

so the farm-bred endli endli we commonly see are just generic endlis. we can't tell their locality origin anymore.

keep in mind that the farm bred are more than likely taken from stock w/ good looking bichirs ... i've seen farm bred bichirs with better looking pattern, longer fins and thicker body than the wild caught .. here in the states we don't see too many farm bred ... they cost much less than wild caught ..
