just wanted to say having a prefilter on the inlet of a hob or canister could really cut down on cleaning. I use a aquaclear 70 sponge insert on both my eheim 2217 and aquaclear 70 and the eheim ran a full year until I decided to clean it just a little brown water slime in propeller chamber and rest of the filter media rinse clear in bucket of tank waterthe same goes with ac70. In the past no prefilter and six month later lots of black crud and it did not smell as pleasant. I think with prefilter sponge people who has sand substrate will not suck sand into their filters. Overall sponge prefilter is the way to go

I just oredered an eheim 2217 and I will be coupling it with an ac110 to run on my new 75g. I am going to be using pfs as a substrate for the first time ever and have been putting consideration into some prefilter sponges. However, wouldn't adding a prefilter sponge cause a lot of the stuff that should be picked up by the mechanical aspects of a filter INSIDE the filter to be stuck in the prefilter? Is that really a bad thing anyway? and how much could a sponge actually do to stop smaller particles of sand from entering a filter intake?

Pre filters work well esp. With sand, it's actually BETTER to trap waste in the pre filter ,that way you don't have to disturb your b.b. holding media near as often :)
