Well ive been looking into gettng a pair of convicts and finally the tank is set up all reayd to go... but my problem is actually getting a pair, can anyone tell me the easiest way to get them paired up? i heard its not like u can put a male and a female in and they will pair up so any help is appreciated:character0063:

Actually, that's exactly what I did. They hooked up in no time and I get at least one batch of fry per month, sometimes two.

so would it work by getting 1 male 1 female? or just try to observe 2 that stay close?

oh yea edit: Can they be sexed at the 1" size?
Just getting a male and a female worked for me. At the store look for a pit that's been dug in the substrate and identify the pair that seems to be guarding that pit.

I can't tell the difference until they're about 1 1/2" or more. But my eyes aren't that great either.

Females are the easiest to spot....Just look for fish with color on the bellies....Common colors found on the belly are Yellow and Orange...Whatever ther case, males do not possess any colors, only black and blue(unless it's pink)....My current spawn are 7 weeks old....Piranha are known as "Wolves of the Water," convicts are "Rabbits of the Water...."Water sluts..........

i got lucky too and just watched em at the lfs and saw a pair.........the females have orange on em..........but if you can't find a pair i'd buy one male and three females......that would be the best bet if your tank is big enough..........

I just made sure I had 1 male and 1 female. They spawn once a month in my tank. When looking I just made sure one had an orange belly and one didn't. 1 week after being in the tank I had eggs.
