So I had a flea(99% sure) jump on me last night which is odd because the only pets in the house are aquatic, but im thinking the house needs to be bombed to get rid of them. I know I should cover my tank, thinking of saran wrapping it, I believe it takes about 6 hrs for the fumes to dissipate. I dont want my tank to get bombed but I dont want to suffocate it either. My plan was to drop the water level to about half so more air is trapped in and then seal off the system well. Does this sound ok for 6 hrs?

Using the bombs is a huge pain in the you know what! First of all, it's not just your tank you have to worry about. All you cabinets that contains dishes must be completely sealed with tape, your bathroom wherever you keep your tooth brush/toothpaste must be sealed, your faucets need to be wrapped and sealed at the spicket, medicine cabinets, fridge water and ice dispenser, pantry doors or any other place you keep food, pillows, door knobs (unless you plan and cleaning them off afterwards), and any thing else you ingest, or could some how cross contaminate to the eyes nose and mouth.

IMO, I would treat with the powder made for carpets (you may have to apply a second time). Then spray your yard (because that's probably the main infestation culprit). They also carry a barrier spray that you use around doors and windows. Make sure to continue to treat your yard every 3-6 months as directed on the product you choose. Otherwise, the fleas from neighbors will multiply to your home again.

I have 2 large dogs, one of which I rescued from the pound. My pound puppy infested our home and yard. This is the route I chose and it does work and it's less of a headache. My brother just went thru the same thing 2 weeks ago. He wanted to bomb their house until I stopped him and pointed him in this direction. I told him what to buy and how to execute and now they are flea free.

If you still choose to bomb, I would suggest hiring a professional. Even if you bomb, you will still have to treat your yard and home entrances with a barrier to keep it from happening again in a few months.

I hope this helped. Feel free to ask any questions.

If you had 1 and have no pets dont be to hasty. It may have come in from the out side on you and they will not survive without having an animal host to feed off. I would wait to see if you have more. and are you positive it was a black fly or gnat?

I have heard of covering the tank in blankets and turn off anything such as filters or bublers that would add air to the tank.

My dad is kind of a crazy redneck, but to get rid of a bad flea problem we had a few years ago he treated the yard and sprayed the carpets around the house with a diluted bleach solution. And it worked. I agree that the bombs are a PITA and I would avoid them.

Thanks for the tips and advice everyone! I didnt know there was an alternative to the bombs, id def rather not bomb unless necessary. I found one flea on me last week then one jumped on me and I caught it and Trapped it in a piece of tape but they look like fleas and are very "hard" like a flea or tick. Im concerned because both times I was in bed and dont want to end up with the black plague or something haha. Im also kinda concerned as to why they are in the house without any pets. Maybe they will just starve and die? Havent had any bites that ive noticed...
