One of my females is pregnant and should be due any day now. The last 36 hours or so she has really slowed down the amount of food she eats, but she still will eat a little bit. I have read they stop eating prior to giving birth. How long before they go into labor do they stop their eating? She has gotten extremely fat recently but the pup movement seems to have slowed down as well. Is this normal? Is this due to the pups having less room to move? I have the female in her own tank which is plumbed into the main system. Once she gives birth I plan to move the pups to another tank plumbed into the main system and leave the female in her own tank until she starts to eat again so she is ready to go back in the main tank. Once the pups are born, how long before they typically start feeding and what should I feed them? This is the first time I have had a pregnant ray do I have no experience, any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

When i have had pregnant rays i have never had them slow down eating, they eat up to giving birth, but it happens sometimes!
It will take 3 days or so for the pups to eat, typically i would cut earthworms/nightcrawlers up as small as you can and that usually works the best. Then after eating, start testing other cut foods.

good luck, update after you have them pups!

Askeepinfish states, 3 days sometimes a week before the pups eat. Depends on size and spieces as well. Black rays up to 7 days before they eat. I have had hybrids eat on day 2. All depends on size of pups as well. Mum should eat next day or agian up to a week after birth. Some eat up to birth and some stop a day or so before birth.
Dont stress and best of luck!!
