I am preparing to replace a 10 gallon with a 20 gallon tank. Here is my plan:

I have an existing 20 gallon that is cycling and an established 10. I am going to take the 10 gallon's filter and place it in the existing 20 gallon along with that one's filter. I am going to use the new 20 gallon's filter in the 10 gallon which is established. That way, the existing 20 will cycle better and the established 10 gallon can help with starting the new 20's filter up. After the established 20 is cycled, I am going to move all the fish there, tear down the 10 and set up the new 20 in its place.

Would this work? Or would it be better to tear down and put the 10 gallon stuff (ornaments, gravel, filter, fish, etc.) into the new 20 gallon from the start and run the filter from the new 20 gallon along with the 10 gallon filter?

Sorry this is so confusing. :nilly:I am trying to replace the 10, but only have the one spot to put the new 20.

alright.. just save the water from the ten. try to keep some of the old gravel and lay the new substrate over it in the twenty. run the 10's filter on the new twenty and don't add new fish stock untill your readings level out. Basically all you would be really doint is a 50% water change and a gravel cleaning.

Yea take the ten filter and move it to the twenty (contains 90% of the bacteria) then move the fish and maybe take the gravel and put it in a bowl inside the twenty but this maybe be over kill. You really shouldn't have any problems as the bio load will be exactly the same just diluted in more water. then wait a week to be safe and add what ever fish you want.

Will work but you if you have new substrate dont lay the new over the old because it will mix every time you gravel vac and if its different colors it might look dumb. Just put it in a container on top of your new substrate if you want to be super safe and then take it out in a week or two. I took all the gravel out of my 55 with no problems what so ever.

No need to save the water, it doesnt hold any of the BB. Otherwise everything else sounds good.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will put in the new gravel and put the old right on top, as they will be the same colors, and are a white mixed with a variegated color. I plan on setting it all up tomorrow. Thanks again.
