Hey guys, I need some advice... I am trying to research pumps for my filtrations, I am looking for something about 700-1000 gph and I am looking to start with an entry lvl pump as I am experimenting with some different filtration setups. I know Rio is pretty good but they start to creep out of my immediate budget but I need something pretty soon. I was wondering if you guys could give me some recommendations that are on the lower price bracket but you have had decent - good experience. If I can show the "boss" the benefits of advanced filtration I can upgrade later to a better pump.

I was considering this one, has anyone ever used it before?

C.A.P. Xtreme 925 gph

Please help! I would like to order one within the next day or two.

Thanks again for all your tips! You guys have helped leaps and bounds already :headbang2

P.S. How come there is a sticky for substrate comparison but no sticky for pump comparison?

IMO, when it comes to pumps, you gotta fork out a little more cash. cheap, and pumps dont really go hand on hand, i learned this the hard way with my first sump build and bought a cheap pump... worst idea, the thing was soooooo loud. By far i really like mag drives and quiet ones, super quiet and lots of power. as for the one you posted, ive never herd of it. try asking around local members or craigslist, thats what i did and was able to find a mag12 for only 80 dollar from a local membe.r

Some of the online retailers put the Quiet One pumps on sale often, they are decent pumps and reasonable priced. As already mentioned, keep an eye on craigslist for used Mag pump, they are great pumps. I purchased most of the parts needed for my 210g build off of craigslist, if your are vigilant in your searches you can score some really good deals. I scored two Ocean Clear canisters, a Mag18 and a Little Giant external pump for under $100!

Alright, I will keep an eye out and see what I can find. Thanks for the tips and advice. Any certain model of mag or quiet one to get into the 700-1000 gph range?

One more question, when a pump says max head, what does that mean? sorry, never used pumps before...

One more question, when a pump says max head, what does that mean? sorry, never used pumps before...

Max height it intended to pump water. I.E if max head is 72" do not expect the pump to be effective if trying to move water vertically more then 72".

Ok, does that count for the intake also? like if I have my pump in a "sump" style setup but the reservoir is above my tank, and my pump in the water box or should I just keep the pump in the tank? I would prefer keeping it in the reservoir and just dropping a pipe with a sponge on the end. Its for an Algae Scrubber if anyone is familiar with them.

taking into consideration the losses associated with twists/fittings/fluid friction in the pipe, the max height the pump can push the water.
