As I get things in order prior to leaving for a 2 1/2 week vacation, I got wondering how the other poly keepers on this site handle being away for their tank for extended periods of time?

For the annual. summer vacation here is my game plan.

In my absence I am only able to get someone to come by ever other day To feed, no water changes are done.

  • I give one Fluval a cleaning 4 weeks prior, the second is done 2 weeks prior. (Usually they are done on a staggered 8 week cycle)
  • The tank gets a 40% water change every second day the week prior.
  • Heater is unplugged as room temp is around 76 this time of year and it eliminates the chance of the heater thermostat sticking. Lighting is always on timer
  • I make up 9 food bags of a combination of Massivoire, beef heart and Tiliapia. I freeze these and organize them in the freezer for thier "baby sitter"
  • Every second day the "baby sitter" dumps a bag in and does an inventory of the fish.
  • I check in weekly, and have a list of contingency plans laid out for the sitter just in case
  • The moment I get home, 50% water change and back to norm on the rest.
In a perfect world someone with experiance would be around daily, however it is not a perfect world we live in.
The above has worked good for me over the past decade.

How do others on the site handle situations like this?

2.5 weeks won't kill them. I've went on vacation back in 2006 for 3 months. I put about 300 feeders in there and when I came back all bichirs are still doing fine and not even a single skinny one. Except that there are plenty of algae and plants grew massive as the lights was on 24 hours. The floating plants gave them shade and also control their activity.

Hey 2.5 weeks is actually good as when you come back for your vacation. Clean your tank make it looks really clear and prepare for a video cam and put a large tilapia in there. You'll be surprise that all of them will do a death roll. I did it before starve the, for almost 2 weeks and the death roll begun. I took some video back then, but when I uploaded it to my comp it was very dark. Gonna buy a new video cam.

Since your plan has worked for the last ten years its great, but I also think that feeding your polys every three or four days is plenty. Just ease them into that schedule and you'll have less waste and less problems.

Good comments, I have looked at levels of reduced feedings to ensure water quality is maintained. I have recently been more and more hesitant to go longer than 2 days between feedings mainly due to mistrust of my ornate.
I worry that coming home I may find one very very fat 20" Ornate and one less smaller bicher (10" Sen or Weeksii) in the tank. :)

Leaving soon, hope every here has a chance to enjoy some summer vacation as well.
