Just curious if anyone has fed their fish with shrimp, fillets, other that contains salt and/or sodium tripolyphosphate for a long period of time. Pretty much all I find contains these preservatives. I am wondering if it is necessary to avoid these preservatives. I fed my fish shrimp with tripolyphosphate and salt for a long time. The fish had good growth, and I didn't experience any problems. Then I read a thread discussing these preservatives are bad for fish, so I have avoided them since.

Look to your local Asian market for cheap fresh seafood

Yeah, I need to search around for a place like this with cheap seafood, because I'm going through a lot of Tilapia these days.

But my question is, do we really need to avoid these preservatives? Or do people say to avoid them because they sound bad? Is there proof that they are bad? I've raised juvenile fish heathily in the past with foods with this stuff in it.

A varied diet is varied

Better safe then sorry in my book.. and I'm just as carefula bout what I eat generally as my fish.

I also feed my fish shrimp and tilapia, and other foods that don't contain the preservative. They get a different food each day though, so its not a constant diet.

How exactly is the sodium tripolyphosphate applied to the shrimp/tilapia? Is the meat coated, injected, or applied under pressure? I soak the shrimp in some tap water and thaw before feeding.
