Whats up with the lack of pressurized aquarium technology? Seems like every home could use a gulper eel to greet the guests. :D

Umh, in a word liability you are talking 10000's of atmospheres . The tank wouldn't need to be presurised anyway if the fish etc. was slowly brought to the surface. You'd need an industrialised chiller though.

I doubt that we know enough about the biology of these creatures to attempt to keep them pressurized or not. Even if their internal pressure can compensate for lower external pressures I doubt that it is good for them to be kept at shallow depths. There doesn't seem to be alot of information on the web about this and what is there is most likely our best guess as I imagine it would be difficult for a marine biologist to study something's physiology under such pressure.

Yeah same i doubt you could slowly bring them to surface and keep them alive either. They do look cool though. Other then the pressure and no light (atleast that the fish can see) i doubt the husbandry would be to difficult for something like that. Fairly obvious it would eat fish. Though ya never know with things like that.

We're learning it's not as simple as bringing bathyspheric species up slowly. Differences in temperature, pressure, and salinity influence hormone production and amino acid use/stability.

Plus guys, you think it's a mess when your 180 gallon breaks in the house. Just imagine your reinforced steel pressurized tank cracking and blowing up : )

I do believe there have been pressurized tanks built by a scientific institution in the past, with little viewing portholes, but I can't remember what they were keeping in it.

ok, a few points to consider as well...

1. many deep water critters do come to shallow water at night to hunt. but when it starts getting light they go right back down. it is the largest migration of life forms in the world when the deep water animals come up for the night.

2. besides pressure and temperature you need to also keep in mind that there are elements in the water at that depth that you would need to suppliment, many of these elements are toxic to normal life but play an important role in life at those depths.

3. You would need to also block normal light from the tank to avoid stressing the fish. you would have to do red light or blue depending on the critter.

it would be totally cool but very complex.

The hobbyest in me wonders at the possibility...

The naturalist in me cringes at the impact this dould make on deep water species....

The DIY'er in me grins at the new equipment it would require...
