Really depends on your application. if you're doing a low tech setup then liquid carbon (its not the same thing as co2 and most of the common carbon additives are also algaecides) is totally fine but if you're running a high light setup injected co2 is basically a necessity in order to meet the carbon demands of the plants and not cause a massive algae farm.
