So I have a ruby read spilo. I want to try a cherax quad (crayfish) in the tank with her, but I don't want her to end up dinner. Where do spilos sleep in the tank? The tank is too dark and there are too many obstacles to look around I can't tell if she sleeps on the gravel or not. Also if I don't get the cray I want to get some snails to take care of the algae. Will she eat them?

Thanks

Depends on the size of the cray vs the size of the fish.
I have 3 large red crays and two small blues in a tank with a few african cichlids.
They are unable to catch a fish unless the fish is sick.
They try to catch em but are much too slow.

I wouldn't put a cray in with the ruby red spilo, if the cray is small, it will probably get eaten, if bit then the ruby red might become dinner. if you want algae control then get some snails, piranhas don't bother with them, at least mine never did.

I have a ton of Assassian snails with mine. They eat algae and most of the leftovers. As for Crayfish, I fail to see the difference between a Live Cray and the Raw Shrimp (shell on) that is commonly feed to Piranha.

i don't think a comparision between cichlids and a species of piranha that doesn't like tankmate is very informal

i agree with jp.....however, my baby rhom won't let the snails in my tank move. Anytime they get on the side of the class, the lil runt knocks them down

you must have a very pissed off rhom, lol maybe pms'ing lol

I have decided against it. Overall I am too worried about the ruby red spilo. A lot of the Australian crays are really tough and can be down right nasty. I think they are a lot meaner then the North American ones.
